06.05.11 The 5th Key for Evaluating the Respect for Boundaries in a Prospective Partner Do Boundary Conversations Produce Behavioral Change?
5. Do Boundary Conversations Produce Behavioral Change?
Observe whether your discussions about boundaries lead to consistent positive adjustment in the prospective partner’s behaviour. Does the person listen, accept and respond positively or does she or he verbally promise to change but fail to deliver?
Mary had witnessed how God corrected Joseph by asking him to proceed with their betrothal process given that the young virgin's pregnancy was of the Holy Spirit, and the prompt and positive adjustment in Joseph’s behaviour as a result. After receiving divine instruction, the man fully aligned his conduct with what God required. His response reflected obedience, responsibility and consistent application of God's instructions (Matthew 1:24–25).
When it came to Victor, the man did not demonstrate any positive behavioral adjustment despite repeated conversations with Daphne. His conduct remained unchanged, revealing disregard for correction and a lack of true commitment to boundaries.
A prospective partner’s genuine respect for boundaries is evident through conduct, not just what the person says. An improvement in behavior after discussing ‘limits’ demonstrates maturity, accountability and a readiness for a responsible partnership. However, a persistent lack of behavioral change indicates disregard for boundaries and significantly increases the likelihood of repeated compromises, even after issues have been clearly addressed.
