6. Are Core Values and Priorities Clear and Openly Discussed?

Assess whether the prospective partner openly and honestly discusses personal core values and priorities. Are these clearly defined? Do the person’s core values and priorities demonstrate consistency, or do they vary across situations? Are they aligned with the direction the person claims to pursue, or do they conflict with it?

When we look at Priscilla and Aquila's success story, their core values and priorities must have been shared, as reflected in the way they lived and worked together. Their partnership reflected shared priorities rooted in their spiritual beliefs, responsibility, hospitality and service. Some of the values the couple displayed included working together, opening their home to believers, investing in teaching and mentoring others, and maintaining consistency between what they believed and what they practiced (Acts 18:1–3; Romans 16:3–5).

Lydia and Sebastian did not share values and priorities. For instance and as already mentioned, while Lydia valued building a local brand and presence, Sebastian was bent on relocation, fascinated by a global brand but with no sound execution plan to show. As already noted, whenever Lydia tried to discuss these differences more deeply, Sebastian would dismiss her concerns, leaving her to wonder if their priorities could ever align.

The bedrock of any long-term partnership is a mutual understanding and respect for each other’s core values and priorities, since these attributes drive the choices a couple makes. Clear and open discussion of values and priorities enables you to check if you are moving in the same direction and adjust whenever necessary, thereby reducing potential friction down the line. Also, this transparency builds a shared moral compass, helping you navigate life with a unified approach.
