06.01.09 The 3rd Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Spiritual Alignment Are the Person's Decisions Consistently Guided by God's Word?
3. Are the Person’s Decisions Consistently Guided by God’s Word?
Evaluate how the prospective partner makes decisions in both ordinary and demanding circumstances. Does the person seek direction from God and His Word before reaching conclusions? When faced with uncertainty, does she or he rely on spiritual guidance or on personal preference? Are choices shaped by biblical conviction or by convenience and ambition?
If asked, Mary would have testified how Joseph always allowed God’s instructions to govern his decisions. For instance, after receiving a divine command in a dream to accept Mary as his wife, the man had obeyed without seeking a second opinion. As if that was not enough, Joseph had believed the angel’s disclosure of the baby’s father, the Holy Spirit, even though that truth must have made the man a laughingstock amongst those in his circles who he would have shared with. Later, when instructed to take the child and his mother to Egypt, he departed by night and began the long journey to a strange land, trusting God for protection along the way. Historical estimates suggest that the journey could have extended several hundred kilometres across demanding terrain, often taking weeks to complete on foot or by animal (Matthew 1:24; 2:13–15). So, Mary witnessed yet again that her husband was serious about allowing God’s Word to shape his decisions irrespective of how demanding an issue would be. Joseph could also have had the same testimony about Mary, a young virgin who accepted God’s instruction despite the shame that could follow. It was clear that for Mary, once God said it, that settled it.
Donald gradually recognised a different standard in how God featured in Harriet’s decisions. God’s issues took second priority. For instance, when Bible study conflicted with her Wednesday networking meetings, she chose career advancement. With time Donald had discovered that her choices were primarily framed by personal ambitions rather than spiritual direction. This created a widening spiritual misalignment, as their decisions were increasingly moving in different directions.
Decisions fundamentally reveal the authority guiding a prospective partner’s life. How a person decides shows who governs them; and that determines whether spiritual alignment is possible. When an individual consistently allows God’s Word to direct his or her decisions, this becomes evident in how the person thinks, chooses and acts. Such consistency reflects spiritual stability, which forms an unshakeable foundation for spiritual alignment in your relationship, ensuring your path is built on shared divine wisdom (Proverbs 3:5–6).
