06.01.19 The 1st Practice for Developing Personal Spiritual Alignment as You Wait
1. Cultivate Daily Intimacy with God
The waiting period is a good time to develop a very close relationship with God as it will be incredibly important before and in your marriage. So, rather than pegging your interactions with God on convenience, mood or difficult circumstances, make Jesus your best friend, giving Him priority in your life. You must be intentional and consistent. Therefore, set aside time to deliberately seek and fellowship with Him, allowing His Word to shape, correct and stabilise your thinking. Trust God’s timing for marriage without becoming anxious or emotionally restless. Recognise that delays do not indicate neglect but often form part of His preparation process. See what Proverbs 3:5–6 (NKJV) says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Train your heart to find identity, fulfilment and direction in God rather than in a preoccupation with marriage. Your aspirations, priorities and decisions must remain aligned with His will, preserving His rightful place in your life as ‘above all’. This requires a conscious surrender of your expectations through prayer, learning to wait without lowering your standards, forcing outcomes or rushing into emotional attachment, courtship or marriage.
It is also important to bring your desire for a relationship before God early, rather than waiting until you are already emotionally involved with someone. When a person shows interest, seek God’s guidance first and wait for clarity before going ahead. This ensures that your decisions are not driven by attraction alone, but are spiritually anchored in discernment and conviction.
