5. Do Emotional Attachments Overshadow the Person’s Purpose and Direction?

Consider whether the prospective partner’s emotional attachments are supportive or counterproductive. Do the person’s attachments reinforce his or her purpose and direction, or do they lead to important discussions about the future being taken lightly? Are such deliberations timely, or are they delayed or postponed?

Priscilla and Aquila’s story suggests that the two were deeply emotionally connected, as they consistently appear together in the Bible. However, despite that connection, the couple’s achievements demonstrate a shared purpose and direction, as they worked, travelled and served side by side (Acts 18:1–3; Romans 16:3–5).

Sebastian’s relationship with Lydia shows that he was deeply emotionally attached to the young woman, expressing tender affection and baseless promises about the future, yet showing minimal bother about a sound purpose and direction. Though emotionally comfortable, the couple hardly made time for serious talks on long-term plans for business in general and Lydia Organics in particular, apart from discussing bubble-like dreams that could burst anytime.

Being emotionally connected is not enough to sustain a relationship. While essential, emotional attachment can become a blind spot when personal and shared purpose, direction and values remain unclear, avoided or never discussed. A prospective partner’s emotional closeness should support mutual growth and progress rather than diverting your attention from your purpose and direction.
