What is Commitment?

Commitment is the deliberate decision that moves a relationship from temporary interest to responsibility and from intention to sustained, consistent action over a long period of time. Commitment determines whether a relationship is treated casually or built with a long-term view which is characterised by faithfulness, consistency and accountability, among other attributes.

Saying “yes” encompasses more than merely accepting a marriage proposal. It entails embracing a calling to intentionally build, protect and nurture a shared life with your spouse. Whilst emotions may initiate a relationship, commitment is the foundation upon which the sustainability of that partnership rests. It represents the conscious choice to stand by your husband or wife, even amidst fluctuating emotions. Scripture affirms this standard, describing a faithful person as one who “keeps an oath even when it hurts” (Psalm 15:4b, NIV).
