06.01.23 The 5th Practice for Developing Personal Spiritual Alignment as You Wait
5. Develop Relational Conduct that Reflects Spiritual Alignment
Spiritual alignment must ultimately position you for a healthy and stable relationship. As you wait, focus on becoming the kind of partner you desire, rather than pursuing an ideal person while neglecting your own growth. This requires humility, teachability and emotional steadiness, expressed in how you relate with others even before marriage becomes a consideration.
Develop qualities that support partnership, such as patience, honesty, forgiveness and responsibility. The bible reminds us that love is patient, kind and enduring, among other qualities (1 Corinthians 13:4–7). These qualities must be evident in your current relationships, not reserved for a future spouse.
Demonstrate love in your daily interactions with family, friends, colleagues and others. Learn to communicate respectfully and serve without manipulation. As Philippians 2:4 teaches, consider the interests of others alongside your own. This ensures that your conduct reflects maturity rather than self-centredness.
Finally, grow in contentment and fulfilment in God so that marriage is not treated as a solution to emptiness or loneliness. A healthy partnership is built when two individuals come together from a place of wholeness, able to share life under God’s leadership rather than looking to a partner to fulfil what only God should provide.
