06.05.10 The 4th Key for Evaluating the Respect for Boundaries in a Prospective Partner Does the Person Respect Emotional, Mental and Physical Space?
4. Does the Person Respect Emotional, Mental and Physical Space?
Observe how the prospective partner responds when you express the need for space or limits. Does the person honor the appropriate emotional, mental and physical distance; or does she or he create unnecessary pressure, urgency or tension? Are boundaries respected or resisted?
As already said, Mary witnessed how Joseph respected the set boundaries as he related to her. Despite the present uncertainty and social complexity, the man had not imposed pressure or entitlement, but allowed events to unfold according to God’s plan (Matthew 1:18–19).
Victor had little or no respect for Daphne’s boundaries, even though she tried to enforce them. The man created situations that appeared as though he favoured ‘emotional distance’ when he had a different agenda. Victor showed no respect for Daphne’s need for guarded interaction. Rather, the man’s reactions prioritised personal desire over restraining his emotions.
A person who respects your emotional, mental and physical space keeps the relationship safe, clear and dignified; whereas ignoring these needs strains your relationship and can reveal controlling behavior. On the other hand, consistently honoring your space shows maturity and stability. The mutual recognition of limits is key to building a healthy and trusting environment where both of you feel secure.
