06.03.10 The 4th Key for Evaluating Signs of Commitment in a Prospective Partner

4. Is the Person Present During Challenging Times?

Observe how the prospective partner responds when circumstances get tough or things become difficult. Does the person stay actively involved in your relationship amidst challenges; or does she or he pull away?

Rachel must have attested to Jacob’s willingness to keep his commitment to her, despite the cocktail of challenges that he was going through. Writers report how the man would work extremely long hours in very harsh and unpredictable weather conditions; breeding and tending large flocks of sheep and goats for his crafty, treacherous, deceptive and dishonest uncle, Laban. However, Jacob did not allow all those challenges to frustrate or demotivate him; but rather, he worked faithfully through it all, to the very end, until he fulfilled his commitment to make Rachel his wife (Genesis 29:20, 27).

Kenneth was different, considering that he was not prepared to go through challenges with Monica. One such example was when the Pastor summoned her to discuss the girl’s intermittent commitment to her duties as an Usher. You may remember how the Pastor proposed to meet Kenneth. However, the man declined, caring less about ruining Monica’s image before her spiritual father. Kenneth was not ready to display openness, accountability and seriousness about their relationship. Instead of engaging, he became defensive and withdrew.

A prospective partner’s true commitment comes to the surface when you encounter difficulties that require the person’s presence and unwavering endurance. A committed partner remains actively engaged and supportive during demanding seasons and adversity, thereby strengthening trust, stability and shared progress in your relationship.
