06.04.08 The 2nd Key for Evaluating Purity and Self-Control in a Prospective Partner Does the Person Demonstrate Emotional Responsibility?
2. Does the Person Demonstrate Emotional Responsibility?
Assess whether the prospective partner takes responsibility for his or her feelings and actions; or shifts blame, plays the victim or projects his or her struggles onto other people. Can the prospective partner communicate emotional needs clearly and respectfully? Is the person empathetic?
Ruth must have witnessed Boaz's emotional responsibility at the threshing floor. The man harnessed his feelings rather than allowing them to dictate his behavior. He remained composed, communicating with responsibility and great wisdom. Boaz showed empathy and concern for Ruth’s dignity and future. (Ruth 3:8–14; 4:9–12).
In contrast, Stephen’s behaviour displayed his lack of emotional responsibility. Rather than confronting his hidden struggles and manipulative tendencies, he projected a fake image of charm and spiritual maturity. The man used emotional intensity and ‘carefully managed promises’ to control people and situations. His pattern of evasion of blame and simultaneous involvement with multiple women showed unwillingness to accept responsibility, inability to empathise and failure to communicate with maturity and honesty.
An emotionally responsible individual takes ownership of his or her personal feelings and actions instead of blaming you or other people for those emotions. The person understands that while external events or people could trigger reactions, the individual is responsible for processing, managing and responding to those emotions in order to remain pure and self-controlled, thereby supporting a God-honouring relationship grounded in stability and integrity.
