What is Purity and Self-Control?

Purity is more than abstinence from physical intimacy before marriage. It is the disciplined management of thoughts, desires, emotions, conversations, environments and behaviour in alignment with biblical principles. This discipline prioritises long-term stability over short term emotional comfort, fostering orderly, emotionally safe and purpose-focused relationships. As Matthew 5:8 states, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

Self-control is the ability to govern impulses, desires and emotional responses, choosing actions that align with values and purpose rather than momentary feelings. Galatians 5:22–23 identifies self-control as a fruit of the Spirit. Together, purity and self-control operate as one system: purity defines moral integrity, while self-control provides the strength to sustain that integrity.

While this chapter concentrates on inner restraint and disciplined conduct, the next chapter will examine how this inner discipline is expressed through clear relational boundaries. Purity and self-control regulate inner desires and personal conduct, while boundaries regulate how two people relate, interact and maintain safe limits.
