06.05.07 The 1st Key for Evaluating the Respect for Boundaries in a Prospective Partner Is the Person Willing to Discuss and Observe Boundaries?
1. Is the Person Willing to Discuss and Observe Boundaries?
Observe how the person responds when topics about ‘limits’ are brought up. Does the individual treat boundary conversations as ‘necessary guidance’ or as an ‘unnecessary restriction’? Is the person willing to clarify limits, expectations and conduct; or does she or he dismiss the subject and minimise its importance?
Joseph must have extensively discussed his intentions with Mary, regarding how he would observe moral boundaries. And, given the divine nature of her pregnancy, those kinds of limits must have been a relief for the young woman. Not only would that have given her body the rest she needed, but she was still a virgin. For Joseph to ‘stay away’ until the birth of the Messiah would honor God’s project, strongly revealing the man’s deep recognition of boundaries and a disciplined regard for moral order, rather than being driven by personal reactions.
Victor showed the opposite pattern. When Daphne raised conversations about physical and relational boundaries, the man dismissed them as unnecessary, even discouraging limits altogether. By claiming that her restraints were overboard, he questioned the validity of her limits and gradually reduced the seriousness of upholding boundaries within their relationship.
When a person treats conversations about boundaries as unimportant, it signals a lack of value for self-restraint. Consequently, the possibility of crossing set limits or behaving in ways that significantly undermine your relationship is highly likely. Conversely, a person who truly respects boundaries will readily participate in dialogue about limits, and demonstrate a clear willingness to observe them. Such openness is a foundational element for building trust and mutual understanding in any healthy relationship, including the ability to exercise discretion in what is shared publicly and what is kept private.
