07.05.12 The 6th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Emotional Healing and Forgiving Nature Does the Person Treat a New Relationship as Fresh or as an Extension of a Past One?
6. Does the Person Treat a New Relationship as Fresh or as an Extension of a Past One?
Observe whether the prospective partner allows a relationship to develop on its own terms; or if she or he builds a new relationship on the foundation of an old one. Does the person allow the new relationship to flourish with clarity and freedom; or does she or he treat it as an extension of a past relationship, carrying forward comparison and patterns formed from previous experiences?
Mary did not have relationships with two different men, but her relationship with Joseph had three distinct phases. The first was before the virgin’s pregnancy; the second was after her pregnancy but before disclosing the matter to Joseph; and the third was after he learned about the pregnancy. As already discussed, the third phase was the most painful, as it suggested shame and perceived betrayal. However, after receiving reassurance from the angel in a dream, Joseph embraced his role as Mary’s husband and Jesus’ earthly father without allowing the weight of that experience to shape his conduct going forward. He did not carry that experience into the next phase of the relationship or allow it to define how he related with Mary thereafter. There is no mention of emotional distance, quiet reproach or any negative emotional residue in their relationship, which signals forgiveness and complete healing from a painful experience.
Rosalind initially struggled in this area. Her previous relationship continued to influence her expectations, leading her to compare new interactions with past experiences. This comparison choked her emotional openness and placed unspoken pressure on new relationships since she remained emotionally tied to her narrative with Tyson, which prevented genuine new connections from sprouting.
Emotional healing enables a prospective partner to treat a relationship as a fresh experience rather than as an extension of a past engagement. Interpreting your behaviour based on past relationships is unfair and will eventually strain your relationship rather than building trust. A partner who allows a relationship to develop without the shadow of unresolved doubt creates space for stability, openness and genuine emotional connection.
