07.05.01 Introducing Forgiveness and Healing

 Introducing Forgiveness and Healing

Every individual enters relationships carrying experiences that have shaped how she or he trusts people, interprets intentions and responds to emotional situations. Some of those encounters may have been negative. However, when past wounds are left unaddressed, they influence present behaviour, often surfacing as defensiveness, withdrawal or disproportionate reactions. Beyond compatibility and affection, strong and resilient relationships require individuals who can face pain constructively, extend forgiveness and pursue emotional healing with clarity and intention. When left unresolved, such pain can quietly sabotage relationships, distorting perceptions, fuelling reactions and eroding trust.

In this chapter, I will briefly share how forgiveness and healing have been practised in our marriage. Building on the fictitious story of Rosalind and Tyson, alongside the biblical account of Joseph and Mary, we will provide guidance on evaluating a prospective partner’s forgiving nature and capacity for emotional healing, as well as on developing that kind of nature as you wait.
