07.04.07 The 1st Key for Evaluating Nurturing Behaviour Does the Person Create an Emotionally Safe Environment?

1. Does the Person Create an Emotionally Safe Environment?

Observe how the prospective partner responds to vulnerability, disappointment and pressure. Does the person create a space where emotions can be expressed without fear of humiliation, criticism or intimidation; or does the environment feel tense, unpredictable or unsafe for honest expression?

Elizabeth and Zechariah must have discovered each other’s tendency to create an emotionally safe environment for one another. We see how they conducted themselves during their long season of barrenness. The bible records that both of them were righteous before God, walking faithfully in His commands, even though they had no child and were advanced in years (Luke 1:5–7). In a culture where childlessness often produced shame, blame, resentment, condemnation or quiet accusation within a marriage, the biblical account does not report any of those responses between the couple, despite the pain and frustration of barrenness that they must have been going through. Their narrative suggests a home where disappointment did not destroy mutual respect or emotional stability.

In contrast, Michael did not feel emotionally safe with Nancy. This was evident in how she responded to her maid’s sickness. For instance, when Sarah became visibly weak and mentioned that she had developed a fever, Nancy dismissed her condition and insisted that she should continue working. Much to Michael’s alarm, the maid nearly collapsed while mopping. A few days later, the man learnt that the same maid had collapsed again and had to be rushed to hospital by neighbours, while Nancy had gone to work as usual. In both instances, Nancy showed no concern for the maid’s well-being, despite the seriousness of the situation.

A nurturing partner creates an emotionally safe space for both of you, where honesty and vulnerability are not punished. In such an environment, disappointment is not turned into blame or accusation, weaknesses are not treated with contempt and errors are addressed without humiliation. Both of you are able to grow freely and build a relationship grounded in stability rather than fear of offending each other or making mistakes.
