07.02.23 The 5th Practice for Developing Emotional Maturity as You Wait Strengthen Emotional Stability through Spiritual Strength
4. Develop Empathy by Learning to Understand and Respond to People in your Space
The bible teaches us to be empathetic. A classic example is in Romans 12:15 which compels us to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. Therefore, instead of focusing only on your own needs and emotions, learn to consider the emotions, perspectives and experiences of other people so that you can recognise how they are feeling. This will guide you to respond with understanding and care.
Seek clarifications before reacting to sensitive matters. Listen attentively while observing emotional cues so that your response is informed and aligned to people’s situations rather than going by assumptions. Let your understanding of others guide your response so that your actions are appropriate.
As your empathy develops, you relate with greater sensitivity and awareness. You build stronger connections and create emotional safety in your relationships.
