4. Is Gift-Giving Practiced with Thoughtfulness and Meaning?
If gift-giving is among your preferred love languages, observe how the prospective partner expresses care through giving. Does the individual give thoughtfully and intentionally; or are gifts routine, last minute or emotionally disconnected? Are the gifts cold symbols or gestures that are given to just to tick a box? Are they used as baits?
Hannah must have recognised Elkanah’s deliberate expression of care through giving. The biblical account notes that the man gave her a double portion because he loved her (1 Samuel 1:5). This gesture suggests that gift-giving was one of Elkanah’s love languages. However, although his gift would come from a loving and caring heart, the gesture did not seem to align with Hannah's most preferred love language, given that her deeper emotional need for reassurance and relief from sorrow remained unaddressed. For Hannah, gifts carried meaning only when aligned with genuine words of affirmation.
Fabian’s gifts often lacked thoughtfulness. He frequently forgot significant occasions and offered last minute, impersonal gestures such as dinners as recompensation; a tendency that reflected obligation rather than genuine care. Eventually, his gifts lost emotional value, leaving Margaret feeling unappreciated, unseen and disappointed.
Gift-giving demonstrates appreciation when done thoughtfully and with meaning. A partner who understands this language gives intentionally, reflecting awareness and care. If gifts are one of your most preferred love languages, such a gesture strengthens your emotional connection. However, if given carelessly or mechanically, gift-giving loses its emotional significance within your relationship.
