07.04.19 The 3rd Practice for Developing a Nurturing Behaviour as You Wait : Communicate with Clarity and Respect

3. Communicate with Clarity and Respect

Address concerns with empathy and respect. Where correction is necessary, focus on the behaviour or action that needs attention rather than criticising the person. For example, instead of saying, “You are careless,” address the issue by saying, “This task was not handled carefully; let’s look at how it can be improved.” Choose an appropriate moment and tone so that your message is received calmly and constructively. Seek to understand before responding, so that your communication leads to resolution rather than blame.

Be considerate and open when communicating with people. Express your thoughts clearly, listen attentively and allow space for dialogue so that communication remains constructive and respectful. In doing so, your words are more likely to strengthen rather than harm those who hear them. The Bible reminds us that our words should build others up. Ephesians 4:29 says (EASY): “Do not say bad things that hurt or insult people. Instead, say only good things that will help people. Your words should help people to become strong when they hear them.”

Communicating respectfully and with clarity builds your confidence in handling difficult conversations so that you are able to resolve concerns more constructively and reduce unnecessary tension in your relationship.
