How Poor Emotional Intelligence Broke Evelyn and Julius’ Relationship – A Fictitious Story 

Evelyn worked as an Event Planner and was known for her warm and outgoing nature. Julius served as a Data Analyst and preferred quiet, predictable environments. The two met at an industry conference where Evelyn's event planning company had been hired to coordinate the event and Julius’ firm was the sponsor. From the beginning, their differences felt complementary. Evelyn admired Julius’ calm stability, while Julius appreciated her confidence, empathy and ability to bring life into every room. In those early months, they believed that affection and good intentions would be enough to sustain a healthy future.

However, as time went on, signs of the lack of emotional intelligence began to leak. On top of the list was their inability to regulate emotions particularly when a disagreement arose. Apparently, it was difficult for both of them to listen without defensiveness or address issues without escalation. As disagreements began to surface, Julius would feel misunderstood and emotionally cornered, while Evelyn felt unheard and increasingly afraid that raising any concern would push him further away.

The glaring flaw reached its peak during a family function where Evelyn interacted with Julius’ openly arrogant and scornful cousin, Betty. Rumour had it that Julius had been dating Betty’s best friend Rianna before, and that the woman’s bad manners had driven Julius off. Alarmingly, the cousin had vowed to reestablish the connection come hell or high water. Betty's glances would always carry a tinge of hostility; like “what is Evelyn doing here?”. At least, so the Event Planner felt. But on this occasion, Betty made some public comments that subtly undermined Evelyn openly. Although people laughed it off, the moment cut deeply. However, when Evelyn later attempted to share her discomfort with Julius, the conversation did not go as she had expected. Instead of understanding and reassuring her, the man was quick to dismiss her concerns, describing Betty’s statements as harmless jokes and insisting that Evelyn was becoming overly emotional.

From that moment, their relationship began a downward spiral. Each time Evelyn expressed a concern, Julius would feel pressured and unready to understand where she was coming from. To add salt to injury, his comments would make Evelyn feel insecure about the presumably hidden intensions of Julius’ unfriendly cousin, Betty. That was how Evelyn would repeatedly press Julius to answer questions about the ‘Rianna issue’. That vicious cycle went on and on for some weeks and before they knew it, emotional exhaustion had replaced the affection that once held them together. At the end of the day, Julius and Evelyn were both convinced that ‘they were not meant to be’ and had to ‘call it quits’.
