07.02.11 The 5th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Emotional Maturity Does the Person Consistently Control His or Her Emotional Reactions?
5. Does the Person Consistently Control His or Her Emotional Reactions?
Observe how the prospective partner manages his or her emotional responses when provoked, pressured or inconvenienced. Does the person remain composed and controlled; or do his or her reactions quickly become intense, impulsive or disruptive?
Rebekah must have recognised Isaac’s remarkable ability to consistently regulate his emotions during a conflict. You may recall, for example, how he responded during the disagreements that arose over the wells he had inherited from his father Abraham. When the Philistines filled the wells with earth and later the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with his servants over the water sources, Isaac simply relocated and continued digging new wells until he found one that was free from dispute (Genesis 26:15–22). Considering that the Philistines and the Gerar herdsmen were operating in a territory that had been granted to him as an inheritance by his father Abraham, Isaac could easily have responded with emotional escalation such as anger, retaliation or public confrontation, but he did not. Instead, the emotionally mature man chose restraint and peaceful progress.
Adrian struggled in this area, as small inconveniences or unexpected changes often unsettled him. A minor misunderstanding could leave him irritated for hours. His frustration from work frequently leaked into his conversations with Selina, making ordinary interactions unnecessarily tense. Adrian’s difficulty in managing his reactions gradually placed an emotional weight on their relationship, which eventually created an unstable emotional environment for the couple.
Consistent emotional regulation is crucial for a stable partnership because it prevents minor issues from escalating into major conflicts. Such inner discipline is a clear sign of emotional maturity and contributes significantly to relational stability. A prospective partner who manages personal emotions with composure fosters a peaceful and predictable environment, enabling both of you to successfully navigate the pressures in your path.
