07.02.12 The 6th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Emotional Maturity What is the Person's Conduct During Disagreement or Conflict?
6. What is the Person’s Conduct During Disagreement or Conflict?
Observe the prospective partner’s conduct when faced with disagreement, tension or conflict. Does the person remain constructive, respectful and solution-oriented; or does she or he become defensive, reactive or withdrawn?
As already discussed, Rebekah must have observed Isaac’s tendency to handle conflict in a constructive manner. We saw that despite repeated provocation and disappointment, he consistently chose to move away and rebuild wells elsewhere (Genesis 26:20–22). Rather than escalating the disputes, Isaac redirected his effort toward productive work. He did not allow conflict to derail the direction of his enterprise.
Adrian, however, often reacted with visible disturbance when faced with unexpected changes or disagreement. You may remember how the man reacted, the day Selina suggested a small adjustment to the project budget, Adrian felt embarrassed and belittled, interpreting the suggestion as a personal attack. His reaction caused an immediate shift in his mood, creating tension where constructive dialogue was needed, and leaving Selina emotionally drained.
The ability to handle disagreement and conflict constructively is a critical indicator of emotional maturity. A partner who receives challenges with composure, seeking resolution rather than reacting with emotional outbursts or blame, protects the stability of your relationship. Such conduct preserves trust and allows the two of you to address disagreements without damaging your connection.
