07.01.22 The 3rd Practice for Developing Emotional Intelligence as You Wait Develop Self-Regulation through Disciplining Your Emotions and Responses

3. Develop Self-Regulation through Disciplining your Emotions and Responses

Be continuously aware of your emotional state so that you are able to proactively manage your emotions and responses rather than being controlled by how you feel. Proverbs 25:28 warns that (ESV): “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”

Do not allow strong and unchecked feelings to determine how you react. Instead, learn to pause, reflect and gain your composure before responding to challenges, difficult situations or even those occurrences that could drive you into ‘over-excited mode’. Such an approach reduces tension and prevents harmful reactions and behaviors that you may later regret.

Consider the possible impact of your responses in the short, medium and long-term. This will guide how you react, helping you to maintain steadiness, reduce unnecessary conflict and exercise care when engaging with people.

As your ability to regulate your emotions grows, you become more composed, consistent and reliable in your interactions. You handle pressure more effectively and respond with greater wisdom in challenging situations.
