07.02.08 The 2nd Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Emotional Maturity Does the Person Trust without Resorting to Control or Suspicion?

2. Does the Person Trust without Resorting to Control or Suspicion?

Observe whether the prospective partner displays calmness and trust when relating with you. Does she or he reveal insecurity that seeks to control? Does the person allow relational freedom or does she or he resort to monitoring, suspicion or constant reassurance in order to feel secure?

Isaac must have recognised Rebekah’s tendency to trust, albeit wisely, without control or suspicion. For example, the woman felt so secure with Abraham’s servant that she agreed to leave her home and family, embarking on a long-distance journey to an unknown land, with a man she had only just met (Genesis 24:58–61). Some writers report that the distance between Rebekah's home in Haran, Mesopotamia and Isaac's home in the Negev in southern Canaan was approximately 700 to 900 km; and that it would have taken around three weeks to a month when traveling by camel caravan. This journey demanded a woman's remarkable trust, not only in the servant but also in the process through which the marriage had been arranged.

Likewise, Rebekah must have noticed Isaac’s trust as well, since he was willing and ready to rely on Eliezer’s judgement. When the servant returned with Rebekah, the bible does not report any interrogation, suspicion or demand for proof. Instead, Isaac received Rebekah and brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent right away, with no questions asked (Genesis 24:63–67). The couple mutually trusted in the integrity of the servant and the process that had brought them together.

Adrian's conduct was different. You may have noticed how the man struggled to trust Selina, given that he would frequently seek reassurance in order to manage or curb his anxiety. Adrian’s insecurity was not rooted in Selina’s conduct but in his own emotional uncertainty, which often made his mood unpredictable and led him to monitor situations instead of displaying trust. The man seemed to expect Selina to be his constant emotional regulator, which ended up straining their relationship.

Emotional confidence is the ability to feel secure without controlling, monitoring or constantly testing the relationship. A lack of trust often presents itself through excessive questioning or suspicion. Marriage thrives where trust is chosen daily, not enforced through fear, monitoring or surveillance. An emotionally mature partner fosters freedom, giving you space for personal growth and connections without resentment or suspicion.
