07.01.20 The 1st Practice for Developing Emotional Intelligence as You Wait Develop Self-Awareness through Daily Reflection of Your Emotions
1. Develop Self-Awareness through Daily Reflection of Your Emotions
Develop the habit of critically assessing your emotions, thoughts and actions so that you respond thoughtfully rather than impulsively. This builds self-awareness since you are able to recognise your emotions and recognise what is driving them. Take time to understand your emotions and the root causes of how you feel. Which of your reactions may be linked to past experiences rather than the current situation? What triggers those feelings or responses? Are they realistic?
Learn to do a ‘soul search’ as part of your lifestyle. Make it a daily practice so that you understand yourself better and communicate more effectively. Being aware of ‘yourself’ will enable you to recognise your patterns and adjust your responses appropriately so that you successfully relate with people in your environment. The bible admonishes us to know ourselves in the light of God's Word. We read this in Proverbs 20:27 which says (NKJV): “27The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart.”
