07.05.08 The 2nd Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Emotional Healing and Forgiving Nature Does the Person Remain Emotionally Open without Guarded Withdrawal or Instability?
2. Does the Person Remain Emotionally Open without Guarded Withdrawal or Instability?
Observe whether the prospective partner opens up without withdrawing or oversharing. Does the person allow new relationships to develop with discernment; or does she or he withdraw out of fear? Does the individual open up to relationships prematurely without reflection? Is his or her emotional expression measured and consistent or reactive and inconsistent?
Joseph must have noted Mary’s tendency to prevent past crises from making her guarded or withdrawn. A woman who had nearly faced public dismissal could have understandably become guarded, fearful or emotionally distant. Yet Mary seems to have trusted that Joseph would not continue to doubt her faithfulness again. Such a stance indicated an understanding of the man’s position at the time, forgiving him for planning to break their betrothal, receiving emotional healing and being open to repairing and rebuilding their relationship.
Rosalind struggled in this area. After her painful experience with Tyson, she became guarded and hesitant to allow new relationships or any form of emotional closeness with men. A lingering fear of disappointment restrained her openness to relational opportunities, distancing herself from potential and meaningful connections with prospective partners. As if that was not enough, the woman had also shown signs of emotional overexposure when she persistently sought reassurance from Tyson while suppressing her discomfort about his growing closeness with Barbara, which revealed a tendency to oscillate between withdrawal and the need for validation.
Emotional healing produces measured openness in relationships. In other words, a healed individual is neither closed nor careless but able to engage with wisdom, clarity, trust and restraint, knowing when and how far to open up to others. Such balanced openness strengthens intimacy, creating a relationship that is both emotionally connected and stable.
