09.05.10 The 4th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Social Maturity and Willingness to Build Effective Support Systems
4. Does the Person Respect Boundaries and Practice Discretion Practiced in Social Matters?
Observe whether the prospective partner exercises restraint in social situations. Does the person understand what should be shared, with whom and at what time,; or does she or he expose private matters carelessly and create unnecessary vulnerability?
Elizabeth must have witnessed Zechariah’s ability to protect their family boundaries, dignity. And discretion from public interferences. During the whole period that he was unable to speak, Zechariah did not openly disclose the happenings that had led to his dumbness. Although the situation could have easily invited speculation or public attention, he did not attempt to manage how others perceived him. Instead, the cleric remained composed and allowed events to unfold until the appointed time when he confirmed the child’s name (Luke 1:20, 63–64).
Likewise, Zechariah must have attested of Elizabeth’s ability to preserve her family's boundaries and dignity within their community. For instance, after conceiving the long-awaited child, she hid for a good five months, to avoid drawing attention to her condition and probably find private space ‘catch up with herself’ as she nurtured her miracle rather than turning a deeply personal issue into public discussion (Luke 1:24–25).
Flavia often handled private matters very differently. During social gatherings she exposed disagreements with Leonard openly, raising personal complaints in front of friends and colleagues. What should have remained a private conversation between the two of them became public, creating discomfort among those present and diminishing the respect that his social network had for their relationship.
Social maturity includes knowing when to speak and when to exercise restraint. A prospective partner who protects private matters and chooses the appropriate time and setting for sensitive conversations strengthens the dignity, trust and respect grow within your relationship and the wider community.
