09.03.19 The 1st Practice for Developing Realistic Expectations as You Wait
1. Reevaluate and Realign your Expectations with Reality
Developing realistic expectations begins with honest reflection. Therefore, during this season of waiting, examine the expectations you have formed about relationships and consider where they come from. What disappointed you in the past and why did it matter? Were those expectations realistic and consistent with the values you desire in a future partner? Scripture encourages such reflection by reminding us to examine our ways and test them (Lamentations 3:40).
Develop a clear understanding of the standards you currently believe are necessary for healthy relationships. Learn to peg your expectations about people on what they consistently demonstrate through their conduct and decisions, rather than on mere words. Carefully examine and realign your expectations as that will bring clarity, helping you to reliably recognise a partner whose values and direction in life genuinely align with your own, should that person come along.
