09.03.20 The 2nd Practice for Developing Realistic Expectations as You Wait

2. Communicate Your Expectations Clearly and Respectfully

As you wait, reflect on the values and principles that will guide your future relationship and learn to clearly express them. Practise stating your expectations with respect and precision. Be prepared to explain what you believe sustains a healthy relationship and why those expectations are important to you.

Many relationships experience confusion because expectations remain unspoken, with each person assuming that the other one understands. Clear communication helps both individuals to comprehend each other’s values and priorities. When expectations are communicated openly and respectfully, it becomes easier to recognise whether two people are prepared to move forward in the same direction.
