09.01.14 The 8th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Respect for Individuality

8. Does Acceptance Remain During Disagreement or Differences in Opinions?

Observe how the prospective partner responds when there is correction, clarification, disagreement or differences in opinion. Do you still remain ‘connected’ or does the situation breed emotional penalties such as distance or withdrawal?

The bible does not report any disagreements or differences of opinion between Aquila and Priscilla. But there is a lot to learn from the way the couple handled correction. They both must have realised each other’s ability in accepting a person even where differences of opinions existed, rather than distancing themselves or withdrawals. For instance, in addressing Apollos, they handled the matter privately and constructively without hostility or rejection (Acts 18:26). The couple must have continued to mentor Apollos thereafter as later, we see him working with Paul (1 Corinthians 3:6, Titus 3:13).

Judith’s experience reflects the opposite. As already discussed, she feared that raising issues about the bakery, the dishonest manager, her workload or Benjamin's expectations would result in emotional distance or misinterpretation. As a result, she avoided necessary conversations in order to preserve the relationship, creating an environment where disagreement threatened her belongingness or being accepted.

In a healthy relationship, disagreement does not threaten belongingness. In fact, conflict can harm a relationship, should one partner learn that expressing concerns leads to punishment or withdrawal. A mature partner engages difficult conversations directly and with respect, listening, responding thoughtfully and remaining present even when emotions are involved, ensuring that acceptance is unconditional, even amid conflict.
