09.01.12 The 6th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Respect for Individuality
6. Is Personal Growth Supported Rather Than Restricted?
Consider whether the prospective partner supports your continued development. Does the person encourage growth in your calling, talent, career and other aspects; or does she or he subtly limit your advancement when it diverges from their preferences? Is your personal development strengthened or constrained within the relationship?
Priscilla must have noticed Aquila’s commitment to her personal growth. As they moved from Corinth to Ephesus and beyond, she remained actively engaged in teaching, ministry and hospitality, including the careful instruction of Apollos (Acts 18:18–28; Romans 16:3–5). Her contribution did not diminish but continued to develop and expand as their relationship grew.
On Aquila’s part, he also would have noted how Priscilla wanted him to retain his individuality in their close and loving relationship. Therefore, although the bible does not delve into details, their success suggests that the man’s progress was not restricted. Rather, Aquila’s responsibility and influence continued to grow in trade and ministry across different regions, reflecting steady development rather than stagnation (Acts 18:1–3, 18–19).
A partner who respects individuality supports and encourages your personal growth. The individual recognises that personal development strengthens the partnership rather than threatening it. This kind of support creates emotional safety and personal confidence, ensuring that the relationship remains balanced, resilient and respectful, celebrating your progress rather than feeling threatened by it.
