How Individuality and Respecting Differences Work in Our Marriage

A Personal Experience

Generally, my husband and I have different personalities and interests. What has kept us going is our appreciation of those differences rather than living as though we are clones. We give one another space and allow each other to be. My husband has a curious and investigative nature, always keen on finding out the latest in the world and filling me in on current affairs. On the other hand, I am passionate about creating content. So, we allow each other to delve into what we enjoy most, with minimal interference.

In our marriage, respecting one another’s differences enables us to preserve each other’s dignity and maintain balance within the relationship. We recognise that each of us is an individual with distinct perspectives, responsibilities and interests, and we avoid ignoring or suppressing one another’s identity in order to sustain the relationship. I do not have to be like my husband in order to be his wife, and vice versa. Not only do we enjoy this unity in diversity, but we also value it. A good example is my singing. Interestingly, a few months after we got married, I tried to get my husband to sing. Can you believe we even composed a song together? We also made a presentation of one of his favourite hymns at church. That was when we fully appreciated that he is not a singer, and we accepted it. We often laugh about it to this day.

In the same way, we allow space for personal growth without creating distance between us. Although we are educated at the same level, our fields are different. By allowing room for individual development, interests and responsibilities, we continue to grow while remaining aligned with our shared values. Our personal development has never been restricted by what the other may prefer. We discuss our aspirations openly and advise one another without insisting on what the other should pursue. We allow each other to be.

Respecting our differences also shapes how we handle disagreements. We recognise that each of us may hold a different opinion, perspective or view on a given issue and how to resolve it. Therefore, we avoid approaching conflict with the aim of proving a point. Rather, we give each other room to air his or her views, endeavouring to listen and understand each other’s perspective after the heat has cooled down. This creates an environment where issues are addressed without unnecessary tension or competition.

In addition, honouring each other’s individuality prevents resentment that could arise from forcing uniformity or disregarding personal differences. By valuing one another’s identity, perspective and strengths, we promote shared participation while reducing the likelihood of feeling rejected, ignored or overlooked. This strengthens the respect that we have for one another and ensures that our relationship remains balanced. As a result, we are able to relate to each other with greater understanding and consideration.

Finally, respecting each other’s differences sustains engagement within our relationship. As we remain open to one another’s perspectives and evolving interests, we are able to learn, adjust and grow together. This prevents stagnation and supports continued progress and development.
