2. Is Information about Plans, Money and Relationships Shared Honestly?

Observe how the prospective partner communicates about important matters that affect the relationship. Does the person share truthful and clear information willingly; or does she or he conceal, evade or distort facts when questioned?

Joseph must have recognised Mary’s readiness to share issues honestly. When disclosing the circumstances surrounding her pregnancy, the young woman did not conceal the matter or compose a story that would ‘make human sense’. Rather than protecting herself, she courageously relayed exactly what had happened despite the high probability of being understood by the man she loved (Luke 1:34–38). Her decision to be transparent brought clarity rather than confusion thence strengthening Joseph’s trust for her.

Likewise, Mary must have noticed Joseph’s honesty. The man, albeit disappointed, would have plainly but empathetically informed her of his plans to ‘put her away quietly’; and how he had changed his plans after receiving the divine instructions to take her as his wife (Matthew 1:20–21, 24). Mary’s trust for Joseph must have grown to a higher level since she would never been reassured that the man had her interests at heart and would never do anything behind her back.

Christine’s pattern of hiding her real job, avoiding explanations on investment team tasks and shifting stories about her background revealed how dishonesty can gradually erode trust. Roland could no longer rely on Christine because of the information she hid about her true identity. The woman did not come clean even when inconsistencies surfaced, such as her father’s appearance at the church.

Trust is strengthened when information about important matters is shared honestly and transparently. A trustworthy person prioritises clear communication, recognising that honesty builds trust and provides stability in a relationship. This includes being open about plans, financial decisions and relationships. Trust becomes difficult to sustain when decisions are made using partial information where some facts are hidden while others are shared.
