09.02.23 The 4th Practice for Developing Healthy Conflict Management Habits as You Wait

4. Address Issues Proactively

If one is not careful, small frustrations that are never discussed can eventually develop into deep resentment. Effective conflict management involves addressing issues when they are still manageable, not waiting until they explode. Therefore, as you wait, be proactive by finding an opportune time and space to discuss such matters. Learn to use a calm tone, focusing on a specific behaviour, incident or occurrence rather than attacking the person's character. Seek clarity about the issue, the impact and the desired change so that the matter can be resolved constructively. Ephesians 4:26 instructs us to be proactive when handling conflicts in that we should not allow a day to end while still angry. By addressing issues early and respectfully, you prevent misunderstandings and build trust. Such an approach helps you identify mutually beneficial solutions in good time, thereby strengthening relationships.
