09.03.12 The 6th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Ability to Manage Expectations
6. Does the Person Understand that Needs Evolve and Expectations May Change?
Observe whether the prospective partner recognises that needs and expectations may change with time. Does the person adjust his or her understanding as circumstances unfold; or does she or he remain fixed on earlier assumptions before the change occurred?
Hannah must have noticed Elkanah’s ability to adjust his expectations so as to be in sync with her evolving emotional needs. Initially, the man had attempted to comfort her through provision and reassurance, believing his love would fill the void she felt. When that did not seem to be as impactful, he studied Hannah further then changed his approach by using words of care, concern, comfort and reassurance (1 Samuel 1:5, 8).
Pius seemed to operate from fixed assumptions. Being unaware that Melody's expectations might evolve beyond material provision the man myopically expected his financial success to be the primary metric of his worth and contribution to the relationship. His focus was steered by what he thought she needed, rather than recognising or adapting to her real expectations.
Effective management of expectations requires a person to be sensitive to evolving emotional and relational realities. Understanding that needs and expectations change is crucial for a dynamic and enduring relationship. A flexible and empathetic prospective partner can adapt as your needs shift. Such adaptability ensures that the relationship remains responsive to each your evolving emotional landscapes, fostering continuous growth and mutual satisfaction.
