The Hidden Strength of Priscilla and Aquila’s Individualities and Differences

A Biblical Revelation

Priscilla and Aquila were a Jewish couple living in the Roman Empire who journeyed together through trade, culture and ministry. From the outset, the two lovers must have recognised that their unique strengths cum individualities and their different perspectives would be valuable to the couple’s partnership.

Aquila, a skilled tentmaker from Pontus, brought practical skills and entrepreneurial spirit into their shared life, given that his trade had endowed him with ‘attention to detail’, problem solving abilities and tremendous physical stamina. Priscilla, most probably from a prominent family in Rome, brought distinct intellect, clarity and amazing teaching skills.

As life unfolded, the couple’s individualities and differences proved to be a synergistic combination. There came a time when Emperor Claudius expelled the Jews from Rome, pushing Priscilla and Aquila to relocate to Corinth and begin all-over again. As they established their life in Corinth, God used the cocktail of their unique differences to prosper the couple despite the strange terrain. Aquila supported Priscilla's teaching and leadership, appreciating her spiritual insight and gifts (Acts 18:26). Priscilla, in turn, valued Aquila's practical wisdom and entrepreneurial strength, recognising his role in providing for their needs and sustaining their ministry. That was how they developed a balanced approach to business, ministry and life as a whole.

A case in point is where Priscilla’s teaching gift made a memorable mark as she trained, coached and mentored Apollos in the ways of God; creating a lasting impact on the early Christian church (Acts 18:26). The woman’s spiritual insight, discernment and relational skills contributed greatly to making her and Aquila valued members of the early Christian community.

Priscilla and Aquila’s hospitality and generosity created a welcoming space for believers and non-believers alike, reflecting the heart of God's love and community. And, in no time, their home had become a hub of ministry, with Paul, their close friend and mentor, often joining them. Their partnership supported the growth of the early Christian community in Corinth, as they hosted and strengthened Paul’s ministry, providing a centre for teaching, fellowship and worship (1 Corinthians 16:19).

The couple’s ability to appreciate each other’s unique personal contributions created a safe environment for both to flourish. This mutual honour allowed them to serve effectively in both business and ministry, attesting to the strength that emerges when differences are valued rather than suppressed.
