09.03.08 The 2nd Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Ability to Manage Expectations

2. Are Expectations Communicated Clearly and Honestly?

Observe how the prospective partner communicates his or her expectations. Does the person express their hopes, needs and assumptions openly; or does she or he rely on silent expectations that others are left to interpret?

Elkanah must have recognised Hannah’s willingness to communicate her expectations openly and honestly. In her anguish, she did not conceal her longing but expressed it clearly in prayer, stating what she desired and the commitment she was prepared to make if her request was granted (1 Samuel 1:10–11). Her communication was neither vague nor indirect but straight to the point, making sure that Elkanah understood where she was coming from.

Pius and Melody both struggled with clearly communicating expectations to each other. You may recall how Melody expected Pius to possess behavioral attributes that, in her perception, were supposed to accompany wealth and exposure. But of course, there was never a window to air those expectations. For Pius and, as already said, the man assumed that his high financial profile would be sufficient to meet Melody's needs, but never communicated that assumption to the girl. Their reliance on unspoken assumptions led to significant disappointment when their internal expectations clashed with reality.

Misunderstanding grows if expectations remain unshared. When individuals rely on unspoken assumptions, relationships become vulnerable to hidden disappointments and unmet needs. A partner who openly articulates their hopes ensures that both individuals are operating from a shared understanding, fostering a transparent environment where expectations can be aligned and addressed constructively.
