What are Social Maturity and Support Systems?
Social maturity is about relating to the people in your environment in a balanced, respectful and responsible manner, while understanding their social norms. That kind of maturity influences how a person engages with his or her support network such as family members, friends, colleagues and the community. A socially mature person builds meaningful connections without being overly dependent, values personal space and contributes to others while maintaining his or her own identity and boundaries.
Social support systems refer to the network of relationships that provide emotional, practical and sometimes financial support, strengthening a person’s well-being and resilience. These systems act as a buffer when an individual encounters challenges. They include family, friends, colleagues, mentors and community groups that offer a sense of belonging, validation and timely assistance. Such support may be found within close personal relationships, professional environments and wider community networks, including neighbours, church members, tribal connections, associations or societies that contribute to collective support.
