10.05.24 The 4th Practice for Developing Personal Character Before Marriage as You Wait
4. Practise Emotional Self-Control and Respectful Communication
While still single, strengthen your ability to manage emotions with maturity, especially when conversations are difficult. Choose thoughtful responses instead of impulsive reactions. When you feel provoked, delayed, corrected or misunderstood, restrain yourself before speaking. Give yourself time to think clearly so that your words are guided by wisdom rather than emotions.
Communicate with respect and kindness, even where there is a disagreement. Protect the dignity of others and avoid harsh speech, sarcasm, silent treatment or emotional withdrawal as a response mechanism. The Bible reminds us that a soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger (Proverbs 15:1). Gradually, you become skilled at handling conflict calmly and addressing issues without hostility. This prepares you to build relationships marked by trust, maturity and consistent connection.
