10.05.09 The 2nd Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner’s Character

2. Is There Alignment Between Words, Actions and Growth?

Consider whether the prospective partner’s words are supported by consistent action. When the person makes a commitment, is it fulfilled or does follow-through drop with time? Do promises carry weight or are they spoken easily and forgotten quickly?

Ruth must have noticed the alignment between Boaz’s words and his actions. When he assured her that the matter of redemption would be addressed lawfully and without delay, his conduct reflected that commitment and the issue was handled openly and in proper order (Ruth 3:12–13; 4:1–10). Boaz, for his part, must have observed the same alignment in Ruth. When she pledged loyalty to Naomi, that promise was not merely spoken but lived out through her continued devotion and disciplined work in the fields (Ruth 1:16–17; 2:3; 3:5). In both cases, spoken commitment was confirmed through consistent action.

Miriam’s words were consistently aligned with her actions. She made fewer promises but honored every commitment. During the UK mission, Martin observed her reliability during challenging moments. When she committed to something, she followed through, even when it required long hours or personal sacrifice. Her consistency gave Martin confidence that what she promised would be honored.

In contrast, Gloria’s words frequently contradicted her actions. She spoke confidently about leadership, service and spiritual convictions, yet when the International Youth Convention required sacrifice and discipline, her follow-through faltered. She missed deadlines, left tasks incomplete and avoided responsibility. Her words created expectations that her actions could not sustain, showing a lack of alignment.

Character is measured by the consistency between what a person says and what they do. Repeated promises without progress signal immaturity. A partner whose words, actions and growth align builds trust and predictability. In a relationship, you can only truly trust a person whose behavior consistently confirms their stated intentions, demonstrating a reliable and evolving character.
