How a Teamwork Mindset Works in Our Marriage
A Personal Experience
One of the root causes of our success is the fact that we always work extremely well as a team. Given the giftings that we have, we complement each other, thereby benefiting from that synergistic partnership. The ability to work as a team has been instrumental in raising our children, ministry and our consultancy work amongst other ventures. Generally, I am the lead consultant whilst my husband handles the Finance and Administration aspect. That arrangement has run so smoothly for years.
A teamwork mindset directs how we handle responsibilities. We approach tasks as shared obligations rather than individual burdens. As much as each of us has clearly defined responsibilities, we willingly support one another when one is carrying a heavy workload that cannot be easily delegated. Therefore, although our responsibilities are well structured, we do not operate with a “that is not my work” mindset. The same principle applies in other areas of our lives, enabling us to maintain balance.
In addition, a teamwork mindset shapes how we approach conflicts and disagreements. We treat them as shared concerns that require resolution, rather than personal contests. We endeavour to work together toward solutions that we both agree upon, rather than spending time on blame games, giving excuses or becoming defensive. It is not always that we will see eye to eye, but in such cases, we respectfully agree to disagree. It is common to say something like, “Ok honey, let us try it your way,” while being careful not to sound sarcastic.
In the same way, teamwork sustains consistent and intentional dialogue between us. It keeps us on the same page as we remain aware of each other’s needs, expectations and the details that emerge through our conversations. Our decisions are guided by shared understanding rather than assumptions.
Teamwork also strengthens our commitment to each other’s growth. By recognising that each person’s progress contributes to the whole, we encourage one another to learn and develop. Given the availability of high-quality information, we intentionally educate ourselves so that we can contribute more effectively and support each other toward greater synergy.
In addition, a teamwork mindset enables us to adapt to changing circumstances. We have come to recognise that our roles evolve with our environment, requiring us to adjust in order to continue working effectively as a team. The establishment of our consultancy firm in Uganda was one of those significant transitions. Having been away for over twenty years, we had to build the organisation from scratch with very limited resources. My husband and I took on responsibilities that would ordinarily be handled by an Administrative Assistant, all within an environment characterised by a high level of moral decay. That flexibility enabled us to maintain progress without allowing the transition to create imbalance or tension within our team.
Finally, teamwork reinforces our trust for each other. As each one gives his or her best, we are able to rely on one another with confidence and assurance that each of us will fulfil our responsibilities effectively.
