4. How Does Character Manifest Under Pressure and Correction?

Consider how the prospective partner behaves when circumstances become difficult. Does the individual remain steady and self-controlled or does strain disturb the person's judgement and conduct? When corrected, does the person listen and make adjustment or refuse and persist without change?

Ruth must have noticed Boaz’s composure and disciplined judgement under pressure. When he awoke at the threshing floor and discovered Ruth lying at his feet, the situation could easily have led to confusion or misconduct. Instead, Boaz responded with restraint and clarity, addressing the matter honourably and ensuring that it would be resolved properly rather than exploiting the moment (Ruth 3:8–13). Boaz, in turn, must have observed Ruth’s disciplined character in the way she conducted herself during a period of financial hardship. As a foreign widow responsible for supporting Naomi, she could have sought sympathy or appealed directly to Boaz for assistance. Instead, Ruth requested permission to glean and worked diligently in the fields alongside the other labourers (Ruth 2:2–3, 7). Her response to hardship reflected a woman who chose effort and dignity rather than dependence.

The UK mission revealed Miriam’s steadiness under pressure. Despite long days, cultural adjustments and emotional strain, she remained approachable, teachable and composed. She listened when guidance was given, adjusted when plans changed and continued serving faithfully without complaining. Her behavior under pressure demonstrated that her character could carry responsibility without destabilising a relationship.

Gloria was different, given that her response to disappointment exposed important realities about her true nature. When she was excluded from the UK mission, the girl resisted the decision, pressured Martin and redirected her frustration toward Miriam through confrontational prayers. Gloria struggled to adjust even when corrected by Martin regarding her prayer patterns, interpreting guidance as opposition.

A person’s true character is revealed when they receive correction or are under pressure. A character that remains calm and shows readiness to adjust when corrected, is essential for the inevitable challenges of marriage. Conversely, a character that amplifies defensiveness rather than refining one’s conduct when stressed indicates a lack of readiness for a resilient and stable partnership.
