10.04.14 The 7th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner’s Teamwork and Partnership Mindset

7. Is Appreciation Expressed for Contributions and Effort?

Consider how the prospective partner responds to the other person’s effort and contribution. Does the person acknowledge and value what the other brings or are contributions overlooked and taken for granted? When work is shared, does appreciation strengthen unity or does silence weaken morale?

Paul’s words show that Priscilla and Aquila were recognised together for their joint labour and sacrifice. Scripture records his gratitude for them as fellow workers who risked their lives for him and he greets them as a pair rather than as separate individuals (Romans 16:3–4). This shared commendation reflects a partnership where contribution was mutual and valued, reinforcing their unity and shared purpose rather than diminishing either side.

Nelson often took Juliet's efforts for granted, making her feel invisible, unvalued and unsupported. He deleted her projections without acknowledging her work and when the project failed due to his errors, he did not express gratitude for her efforts to clean up the misunderstanding. His actions demonstrated a lack of appreciation for her significant contributions.

A partner who consistently fails to show appreciation for contributions can create an emotional deficit in the relationship. When contributions are acknowledged sincerely, it strengthens unity, reinforces purpose and motivates a partner to multiply their efforts. A partner who values appreciation and gratitude is more likely to cultivate a positive and loving relationship, recognising and valuing rather than erasing each other’s contribution.
