10.03.12 The 5th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner’s Financial Readiness
5. Are Financial Goals Realistic and Pursued Jointly?
Scrutinise how the prospective partner approaches financial goals. Are the goals clear, practical and realistic or are they ambitious but undefined and disconnected from present capacity? Is the person open to involving a partner in shaping direction; or does she or he prefer to make decisions made independently without consultation?
Asenath must have witnessed Joseph’s capacity to define realistic financial goals and pursue them jointly as a team effort. Scripture records how he established a shared understanding with the Pharaoh’s the Pharaoh regarding goals of the Grain Project. Joseph established a clearly defined plan tied directly to the cycle of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of scarcity (Genesis 41:29–30, 33–36). The goals was specific, achievable, realistic, time bound and supported by measurable action. Rather than being a vague ambition, the ‘preservation strategy’ was was structured, defined and deliberately implemented.
Joseph, in turn, would have observed Asenath’s commitment to shared and realistic financial direction. Being prime minister, they must have had a large, well-staffed household, requiring sound financial discipline to manage it. While he was deeply involved in implementing the Grain project, Asenath would have been at the helm of managing financial issues as a shared effort. Stability at home during a season of intense national responsibility usually reflects coordinated rather than competing priorities. Their financial goals were most probably mutually agreed upon.
Bernard's financial goals were unilateral and unrealistic. His decision to borrow huge stock from a Turkish trader created based on the assumption that Martha would bail him out created an unrealistic financial burden. The man did not involve her in setting that goal or assessing its feasibility, indicating a high level of financial irresponsibility.
Financial goals that are realistic and pursued jointly foster unity and mutual support in a marriage. A prospective partner who sets and shares financial aspirations that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound demonstrates financial maturity and a commitment to shared vision. This ensures that financial aspirations strengthen your relationship through shared effort, avoiding the pitfalls of uncommunicated or unrealistic targets.
