10.04.12 The 5th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner’s Teamwork and Partnership Mindset

5. Does the Person Offer Practical Support During Demanding or High-Pressure Seasons?

Consider how the prospective partner responds when you or others encounter demanding or challenging circumstances. Does the person step in and support actively when pressure rises; or does she or he withdraw and leave you other to carry the strain alone? When change or difficulty comes, is their support visible and consistent or uncertain and inconsistent?

Priscilla and Aquila must have recognised each other's support during challenging seasons. A case in point is when they relocated together after the expulsion from Rome, after which the couple had to rebuild their livelihood in Corinth. That must have been one of the most challenging times in their journey as a team. Nonetheless, they worked together, establishing stability in their home, business and ministry, through coordinated effort (Acts 18:1–3). Their conduct reflected shared endurance and mutual support during difficult circumstances rather than ‘going it alone’.

Nelson showed a complete lack of practical support for Juliet. Despite his clear understanding of the professional risk to Juliet's career due to his mismanagement, he was not interested in supporting her during the crisis he created. He remained unbothered by her efforts to "clean up the misunderstanding" and even allowed her to be questioned by her supervisor regarding his errors.

A teamwork-minded person steps in to help when a partner is tired, overwhelmed or handling demanding responsibilities, providing support without being asked. Offering timely support generates emotional safety, indicating that neither partner will carry a challenge alone. This demonstrates empathy, maturity and reliability, all fundamental for a long-term partnership that can withstand the inevitable stresses of life.
