10.01.21 The 2nd Practice for Developing Effective Communication Habits as You Wait

2. Choose Emotionally Safe Moments for Important Conversations

During your season of waiting, develop the discipline of identifying the best moments for important conversations. Pay attention to timing, tone and your environment, so that you handle difficult discussions with composure and understanding, instead of being raised in tense moments or while your targetted hearers are distracted. Speak when the atmosphere allows you and your listeners to think clearly, listen actively and respond responsibly (Proverbs 25:11).

Postpone a conversation in case the hearer is unsettled, fatigued or distracted. Choose a setting where the matter can be spoken about calmly and understood correctly rather than avoiding the issue. In this way, timing becomes part of your maturity because you protect both your message and your tone from avoidable conflict.
