5. Does the Person Communicate Proactively When Circumstances Change?

Observe how the prospective partner communicates when circumstances shift or new realities emerge. Does the person make his or her intentions known early and clearly so as to prevent uncertainty; or does she or he remain silent, delaying communication until the last minute, allowing confusion to grow?

Boaz must have recognised Ruth’s openness in the way she approached him directly at the threshing floor and clearly expressed her situation and request within the accepted Jewish custom (Ruth 3:9). Although the bible is silent, one could infer that circumstances had changed and Ruth was no longer viewing Boaz as just a village mogul but someone she was attracted to. She did not conceal her need or wait for events to unfold blindly but took the bull by the horns, seeking him out that night at the threshing floor. Ruth likewise must have recognised Boaz’s proactive communication when he made his intentions known publicly at the city gate, gathering the elders and addressing the matter openly rather than allowing uncertainty to persist (Ruth 4:1–12).

Dorothy’s experience was different. Apparently, William would consistently fail to communicate proactively. The man would go silent when issues arose, delay updates and conceal problems until they evolved into crises, such as the missing report, the failed livestream preparations and the expired passport that affected the entire team.

A ready partner communicates changes proactively, thereby preventing panic, suspicion, disorganisation and unnecessary disappointment to mention a few. Such an approach fosters transparency and trust, ensuring that you and all other relevant other parties are informed so that necessary adjustments can be made in good time.
