10.01.23 The 4th Practice for Developing Effective Communication Habits as You Wait
4. Identify and Overcome Barriers to Effective Connection
In your preparation period, learn to identify and remove barriers that interfere with or block effective communication. Recognise that connection is shaped not only by words but also by tone, facial expression, silence, sarcasm, withdrawal, dismissive gestures and poor timing among other barriers. These behaviours often communicate more loudly than speech and can cause uncertainty even when your intentions are not hostile.
Correct harmful habits early. Avoid using silence to punish, sarcasm to mock or withdrawal to avoid responsibility. Learn to address issues directly and respond consistently so that relationships remain clear and stable. Your words should edify and minister grace to your hearers (Ephesians 4:29). This will guard your interactions from mannersims that create distance and drive people away.
