10.04.13 The 6th Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner’s Teamwork and Partnership Mindset

6. Are Planning and Responsibilities Shared Fairly?

Consider how the prospective partner carries responsibility across different situations. Does the person continue to share planning and work consistently as circumstances evolve or does participation weaken, leaving one side to carry unequally more responsbilities? When duties repeat and seasons change, does the person remain engaged or gradually withdraw?

Priscilla must have recognised Aquila’s steady participation in the way they worked together as tentmakers and later shared the ongoing responsibility of hosting and supporting the community of believers. Scripture shows that their work and ministry were consistently carried jointly rather than occasionally (Acts 18:1–3; Romans 16:3–5). Aquila likewise must have recognised Priscilla’s consistent contribution in those same responsibilities, as she remained actively involved rather than shifting the burden to him. Their conduct reflected sustained cooperation and shared responsibility across changing seasons rather than uneven participation.

Nelson consistently expected Juliet to handle most of the responsibilities, often behind the scenes and then would attempt to “take the glory” for himself. He abandoned his assignments, forcing Juliet to scramble and cover for him, such as when she spent an entire morning cleaning up his miscommunication with the consortium director. This created an emotional and practical imbalance.

When one partner consistently carries the bulk of the load while the other remains uninvolved, it creates an emotional and practical imbalance. A partner who consistently shares planning and responsibilities fairly demonstrates readiness for partnership. This mutual contribution prevents exhaustion and ensures that shared obligations are navigated collaboratively, fostering a sense of equity and preventing resentment.
