04.08.01 Introducing How to Become a Value-Adding Employee

Adding value as an employee refers to making your team, department, directorate and organisation better than how you found it. In general, it is to do with focusing on cutting cost while generating more revenue or other strategic benefits for your employer.

An employee’s ability to add value enhances profitability and bottom-line performance, thence significantly and noticeably contributing towards achieving the vision, mission, strategic goals and objectives, at all levels of the organisation.

There are many benefits that value-adding employees could enjoy. Firstly, they (employees) are regarded as assets by organisations, thereby enjoying professional and career growth, job satisfaction and security while attracting recognition, higher remuneration and promotions. In a world where downsizing, retrenchments and laying-off of workers are becoming the norm, organisations strive to find and retain value-adding employees.

In this chapter, we share how I added value as a commercial manager of an Airline. We also look at how Naaman’s servant girl added value by finding a cure for his leprosy. Thereafter, we will discuss how you can add value to your organisation through the activities you perform or the work you do as an employee.
