The Woman as an ‘Ezer’

We have seen that the man was glad to receive the woman on his team. But what kind of value was she going to bring on board?

Genesis 2:18, gives a sneak peak of that value, where God said (KJV): …it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. The Amplified Bible, Classic Edition elaborates that verse by saying (AMPC): … I will make him a helper (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him.

The Hebrew word for ‘help meet’ is ezer which means to ‘save’, ‘rescue’, ‘support, ‘protect’ and ‘be strong’, especially during times of danger, hardship or distress. The word ezer appears twenty-one times in the Old Testament ; out of which it refers to God as ezer sixteen times. The same word is used three times to refer to the help that Israel sought from mighty nations; and only twice on Eve as an ezer of man.

I would like to infer that the value that the woman was to add would proactively save, rescue, support and protect mankind as well as God’s creation from imminent danger, hardship and distress; and by so doing contribute towards facilitating mankind to be fruitful, increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion or rule over all creatures, thereby fulfilling God’s mandate as given in Genesis 1:28. For example, since the woman was carrying a womb, she would save mankind from the danger of extinction.

A woman’s immense value is also mentioned in Proverbs 31:10 where it is rated to be higher than the most expensive of jewels. That verse reads (AMP): An excellent woman [one who is spiritual, capable, intelligent, and virtuous], who is he who can find her? Her value is more precious than jewels and her worth is far above rubies or pearls.

To wrap it up, we were created to add value to the lives of our husbands, children, parents and other relatives and friends; as well as to our homes, churches, businesses, employers and so on, by being ‘ezers’. How can we fulfill that divine role? That is what this book is all about.
